What’s on Google Finance homepage?

To view the Google Finance homepage, go to finance.google.com on your device’s browser. Then sign in to your Google finance account, and you will be directed to the Google Finance homepage.

On the homepage, there is the Google search box at the top where you can search for companies to get information on them.

By the left side of the homepage, there are the “markets”, “News, portfolios”, “stock screener” and the “Google Domestic Trends”.

How to create portfolio in Google Finance

First off, you will need to have a Google account to gain access to the Google Finance platform. Gaining access will allow you to create a portfolio, take part in discussion groups, and keep track of financial information on Google Finance. To create a portfolio in Google Finance, follow these steps:

  1. On your device web browser, go to finance.google.com
  2. Sign in to your Google Finance account, using your Google account login details.
  3. Click the “portfolio” on the left side of the homepage.
  4. Click the “create a portfolio” at the top right corner of the page
  5. Enter a name for your portfolio in the provided fields and then click “ok”.

Congratulations! You have created a new portfolio. Now you can start adding stocks and funds to your portfolio.

Adding transaction to portfolio

You can sell short transactions, track your buy and do a lot of other stuff on your portfolio. You can add stock symbol by entering the stock symbol in the “add symbol”. To add a transaction to your portfolio, click the “add transaction data” and then type the transaction date, price and number of shares in the provided fields appropriately. Then, click the “add to portfolio” button.

To have your transaction affect your cash balance, tick the “deduct from cash” checkbox. You can always change which of your transaction is linked to your cash through the transaction editing page in your profile.

To add more transactions to the same company, follow the same process of adding transaction.

How do I Delete my Portfolio?

You can delete a portfolio in Google Finance account by clicking the portfolio you want to delete and then clicking the “delete portfolio”. A confirmation to permanently delete the portfolio and all transaction in it will pop up. Then, click “ok”.

Remove items from your portfolio

You might want to remove some items from your portfolio, so to do that, click the portfolio you want to remove items from. Then, click the “edit portfolio”. Delete the tickers of the securities you want to remove, from the text box. Click “save changes”.

To remove individual transactions from your portfolio, click your preferred portfolio and then click the “edit transactions” next to the portfolio you want to edit. Tick the “delete” checkbox next to the transaction you want to remove. Now, click “save changes”.

The “edit transaction” link directs you to the page where you can change your transaction records and track your transaction.

How to Import Portfolios to Google Finance

If you have a portfolio on another financial news site, you can easily transfer them to your Google Finance portfolio page. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Download your portfolio from the financial news site, in CSV or OFX format
  2. Then, on your device web browser, go to finance.google.com
  3. Sign in to your Google Finance account, using your Google account login details.
  4. Click the “portfolio” on the left side of the homepage.
  5. Click “import transactions”
  6. Next, click the “browse” button to select the CSV or OFX format of your downloaded portfolio
  7. Click “preview import”

Market data in Google Finance

Updates on portfolio data are not in real time, as it is delayed by around 20 minutes. You can find information about a company by simply typing the name of the company in the Google search box situated at the top of the Google Finance homepage. As you type the name of the company, different companies will start appearing on a drop-down. Click on the company of your choice, from the drop-down. This will take to a page where a variety of information about the company, like recent news, stock discussions and other information about the company, is available.

The charts on Google finance are pretty impressive, as it updates itself by correlating market data with up-to-date stories from Google news. With the chart, you are also allowed to see the effect that individual story has on the price of stocks. You can also use your cursor to drag charts to a different time period, view stock’s price and volume at any given time, and do a lot of other things. To track the performance of your stock, you can use the zoom features.

Google Finance under renovation

Google Finance has notified its users that they will be undergoing renovation. And as part of the process, the portfolio won’t be available after Mid-November, 2017. So it has been advised that you download your portfolio from your Google Finance Portfolio page. And to do that, go to finance.google.com on your web browser. Click the portfolio you want to download and then click “download to spreadsheet” or “download to OFX”.
