Googles Maps Offline – How to use google maps offline | maps.google.com

It is possible to use Google maps offline if you have run out of internet data or you find yourself out of data coverage. To do this, you must first download the offline data using the internet. A lot of people use google map on a daily basis, and in some cases, they may be out of data coverage, so having an offline feature in the Google maps is an added advantage.

 

Meanwhile, most people are not aware of this feature in the google maps. Not to worry, I will show you how to successfully download and use Google Maps offline.

How To Download Google Maps Offline

  • If you don’t already have ‘Google maps’, download it from the play store or click here.
  • After downloading it, ensure you are signed into your Google mail account.
  • Open the Google Maps App on your mobile device.
  • Search for any city you will like to navigate and download.
  • At the bottom of the screen, tap the name or address of the location you have searched for.
  • Select ‘Download’ button.

Having downloaded the Google Maps offline, Google lets you specify the segment of the map you want to save.

Note: The downloaded offline maps will be available to use for only 30 days after then it will be automatically deleted by Google. You can save only 2500 Mb of data per map, but you can save multiple maps of the same location. The map of the area will be shown to you, with the option to download it. Click on the “Download” icon again to confirm.

After downloading the map, you can find the maps you have downloaded by tapping on ‘My places’.

Storing Offline Data In SD Card

Actually, when you download Google maps offline, it will be stored in your phone storage. You can change the settings to allow storing of offline data in SD card, to conserve storage space in your phone memory. To do this, follow the steps below;

  • Ensure you have an SD card on your phone and your phone supports moving of data to SD card.
  • Open the google maps app on your phone.
  • In top left corner, tap ‘Menu’ > Offline areas
  • In the top right, tap ‘settings’.
  • Finally, in the ‘storage preferences’, tap ‘Device’ > ‘SD card’.

Use Google Maps Offline

Furthermore, when your internet connection is not available or out of coverage, you will see an icon like a lightening bolt, and Google map will use your downloaded offline data to give you directions.

Note: Google maps offline is only usable for driving directions and not cycling, transit, or walking. When using it, features like lane guidance, traffic and other recommendation by the app will not be available to use.
